Case Study - HS1 Visitor Economy Study

To mark the 10-year anniversary of the line, HS1 commissioned Go To Places and Destination Research to carry out a project aiming to assess the impact of the train line on the visitor economy.

A complex report, using a mixed method approach, showed that leisure journeys to Kent via HS1 have increased almost nine-fold, from 100,000 in 2010 to 890,000 in 2016. Secondary research, as well as visitor interviews and a business survey were carried out, followed by an economic impact assessment.

Looking at both visitors but also Kent businesses, has offered a comprehensive picture of HS1’s strategic importance in the county, and supplementing it with economic modelling has uncovered the numbers behind the narrative.

An infographic of the report can be viewed here.
